DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE NIGERIAN AND THE US LEGAL SYSTEM
The Nigerian Legal system is influenced by English law. We operate in the common law system in Nigeria just like the United States. In Nigeria, we have customary laws and the Sharia laws which are more particular to certain areas in Nigeria. Sharia Laws are used mostly by northern states in Nigeria. The common law system in Nigeria is very similar to that of the United States. Although there are similarities, there are still several differences.
In the United States of America, they have several Bar licenses particular to several states in the United States. For instance the Illinois Bar is different from the New York Bar. You would need to obtain a license from the New York Bar to practice in New York even though you have an Illinois bar. In Nigeria we have just the Nigerian Bar which qualifies you to practice in all federal and state courts in Nigeria.
I also realized that while working on cases in Teil Firms, we used the e-filing system to file court cases. In Nigeria we have not been able to move from the physical system to the e-filing system. We file cases in the courts themselves.
