Black Diamonds? Could They Be The Rarest Ever?
Black diamonds are a rare form of diamond found only in Brazil and Central Africa. In 2006, the largest Black diamond was said to have fallen out of space. The record-breaking, 555.55-carat gemstone, dubbed “The Enigma” dropped millions of years ago from outer space, according to the iconic auction house’s expert gemologists. According to Binani, the diamond has belonged to the anonymous consignor for more than two decades. This is the first time it is exhibited publicly and offered on the open market. It was not clear when and where the diamond was discovered and cut. Black diamonds like this one, also called carbonados, are formed out of a meteoric impact to Earth, forged out of the blast or deriving from the asteroid itself, as stated by Sotheby’s.
Binani, a jewelry specialist at Sotheby's said that the diamond has belonged to the anonymous consignor for more than two decades. He acquired the diamond in its rough form and cut it out with 55 sides.
Sophie Stevens, a jewelry specialist at Sotheby's Dubai, told the Associated Press that “the shape of the diamond is based on the Middle-Eastern palm symbol of the Khamsa, which stands for strength and it stands for protection”. The black diamond will be going to the highest bidder by February 2022 at Sotheby’s.
